Review: The Sum of All Kisses

Book Review: The Sum of All Kisses, by Julia Quinn, 4 stars

Sarah Pleinsworth can’t forgive Hugh Prentice for the duel he fought three years ago that nearly destroyed her family, sent her cousin fleeing, and left Hugh himself with a badly injured leg. That’s fine with Hugh, who can’t tolerate Sarah’s dramatic ways. But when the two are forced to spend a week together, they find that unexpected kisses, and mutual passion, may have the power to change both of their minds.

Genre: historical romance

Publication date: October 2013

Mature content: yes

Review: The Sum of All Kisses is book three in the Smythe-Smith Quartet series by Julia Quinn and, in terms of timeline, closely follows books one (Just Like Heaven) and two (A Night Like This). Technically, The Sum of All Kisses can be read as a stand alone but I would still advise you to start with the series in the correct order.

I really liked The Sum of All Kisses, but I had a few issues with the plot and that's why I'm rating it with four stars instead of five. First, I think the enemies to lovers part of the plot was a bit too much too fast. Sarah and Hugh seem to go from worst enemies to "in love" in the space of just a couple of days. And second, I found it highly satisfying that Sarah could settle the (sort of) disagreement between Hugh and his father, but the way she does it is not entirely convincing and I'm pretty sure would never work in real life. That whole scene, in fact, is strange and pretty much unbelievable.

I still loved the happy ending and all the very funny moments in between, especially when Sarah and Hugh are still acting as enemies.

Happy readings,
