Book Review: Threshing Day, by Rebecca Yarros, 4 stars

THIRTEEN UNFORGETTABLE STORIES.

ONE LEGENDARY DAY.

Welcome to Threshing Day, the brutal, high-stakes trial where would-be riders at Basgiath War College fight to earn the bond of a dragon or die trying. Amid ruthless competition and dragon fire, these thirteen cadets must survive a battlefield where desperate rivals will do anything to gain an advantage and dragons decide one's ultimate fate-and where a single choice can forge a rider...or destroy them.

Xaden Riorson, the powerful leader. Rhiannon Matthias, the clever friend. Dain Aetos, the dutiful rule-follower. Liam Mairi, the kindhearted protector. Ridoc Gamlyn, the jokester. Sawyer Henrick, the underdog. Garrick Tavis, the dependable aide. Imogen Cardulo, the impulsive fighter. Bodhi Durran, the second-in-command. Mira Sorrengail, the fearless rider. Brennan Sorrengail, the brilliant tactician. Aaric Graycastle, the restless royal. Sloane Mairi, the determined sister.

On Threshing Day, there's only one rule: don't die.

Genre: fantasy

Publication date: September 2026

Mature content: nothing overly graphic other than general violence, mostly between dragons and humans which are not meant to be their riders.

Review: If you are a fan of the Empyrean series, by Rebecca Yarros, then Threshing Day will be a fun, quick read. The highlight is definitely getting extra insight into the characters - I especially loved "looking" inside the minds of the dragons - which offers a fresh and entertaining perspective on their personalities and dynamics.

That being said, go into it with moderate expectations. It is a very short book, and truth be told, it doesn't add all that much to the general plot of the series. It's just bonus content for dedicated fans and makes no sense as a standalone read.

Overall, it's a light, enjoyable little book for fans who just want a little more time in this world and with these dragons (while we are desperately waiting for book four, right?), but not a major game-changer.

Happy readings!
