Review: Royal Mayhem

Book Review: Royal Mayhem, by Samantha Jane Grubey, 2 stars

Melinda Brown doesn’t want much in life, graduate university and survive.

Prince Alexander has everything, surrounded by riches and spoiled to the core. Everything he’s ever wanted has been at the tip of his finger due to his prestigious status as future King of England.

Despite coming from two different worlds, they share the same university. One day, everything changes when the two crash into each other’s lives, literally.

As they both enter each other’s worlds, they’re forced to make compromises for the sake of their growing attraction.

Will Melinda and Alexander be able to win people with their love, especially when it becomes clear that they both hide secrets? Or will Prince Alexander be denied for the first time by the first woman that he truly wants? Not everything is as it seems in Royal Mayhem.

Review: Royal Mayhem is based on a cute (if not highly original) idea and could have been a captivating new adult romance. Unfortunately, I think the delivery was not all that good.

The core concept for the first part of this duet is engaging. The story centers on Melinda Brown, who is simply trying to graduate and survive university, and Prince Alexander, the spoiled (emphasis on spoiled, since at the beginning of the book he comes across as very rude and arrogant) future King of England, whose lives literally crash into each other. The tension built around them coming from two different worlds, hiding secrets, and being forced to compromise for the sake of their growing attraction is a compelling setup but...

...the execution feels clumsy and reliant on overused tropes. Character development is limited and internal pacing feels rushed and awkward - and honestly. a lot of the situations are pretty much unrealistic.

And the book certainly deserved better editing. There are so many weird phrases and typos that sometimes it's hard to follow the story while trying to discover what the author really wanted to say.

Royal Mayhem is part of a duet and obviously ends on a cliffhanger. Once the second part of the story is published I will probably give it a try just to find if and how Alexander and Melinda get their happy ever after moment, but at this point in time I'm not holding my breath....

Happy readings otherwise!
