Review: Claws and Feathers

Book Review: Claws and Feathers, by Jennifer Hartmann, 3 stars

Orphaned, betrayed, and estranged from my only sibling, I escape to the quiet town of Crow’s Peak, eager to bury my past and forge a fresh start.

Little do I know, the ghosts I thought I left behind are about to resurface.

Abducted and held captive by an unfamiliar stranger, I find myself thrown into a new nightmare. That’s where Cooper McAllister comes in—the local cop assigned to my case. In a race against time, he rescues me, becoming my hero in every sense of the word.

But he soon realizes that finding me was just the beginning. In order to save me, he must unravel my secrets; a task that proves more challenging than either of us expects.

Yet, as Cooper inches closer to the truth, we can’t help but inch closer to each other. Lines blur between duty and desire as the urgency to solve my case competes with the growing connection we can’t seem to ignore.

In the shadows of Crow's Peak, my life is still on the line, and danger lurks around every corner.

But love lurks, too.

And it just might be the one thing that saves us both.

Review: I guess somehow there had to be a book by Jennifer Hartmann that I would love as much as the others. Well, I found it.

I liked the idea behind the plot of Claws and Feathers, but there's something off about the characters and parts of the plot. The combination of romantic suspense, trauma, and mystery had potential, but but the story moves slowly for long stretches before suddenly rushing through major reveals. Some twists were predictable, and the suspense lost impact because the story leaned heavily on repetitive inner monologues and drawn-out emotional scenes.

Overall, Claws and Feathers isn’t terrible, but it felt like a fairly average romantic suspense novel wrapped in heavier themes than it knew how to handle, nothing like the truly emotional roller coaster of the other books I've read by the same author.

Happy readings otherwise!
