Review: Alexander and Rebecca

Book Review: Alexander and Rebecca, by Marianne Knightly, 3 stars

A future king claiming the woman he loves.

Prince Alexander, heir to the throne of Valleria, takes his duties very seriously. So seriously, in fact, that he’s followed duty over pursuing the woman he’s loved for years. However, now it’s time for him to marry, and he’s tired of waiting. He’ll pursue her despite royal objections, and despite her own.

A commoner falling in love with a prince.

Rebecca Campo loves her work as chief of staff to Princess Catharine, her friend and Prince Alexander’s twin sister. Alex is every woman’s dream, and it comes as a shock when he seems to want her. Even after their passions overtake them, Rebecca still doesn’t believe they’re meant for forever because she’s only a commoner, not a future queen.

An unexpected threat that can destroy them both.

When a death threat is made against Alex, the whole family goes on alert. What no one counted on, however, was Rebecca getting caught in the crossfire.

Review: Fun story, but not all that good. Mostly, this book needed buildup and more character and plot development.

The story starts on the day Alexander, crown prince of Valleria, decides to pursue Rebecca. Apparently he's been in love with her for quite some time but never gave any indication of of his interest - and as far as we can deduce from the way the plot unfolds, their interactions have been fairly limited in the past, even though Rebecca grew up in the palace as the daughter of one of the staff members. Physical attraction would make sense, lust maybe as well. But love? Harder to stomach. And why would he suddenly wake up on that particular day and decide he wanted to marry her? No one really knows, maybe not even Alexander himself.

Then we have Rebecca, who has admired Alex from afar for years, believing him unattainable. And then suddenly, once he tell her he loves her, she seems to fall in love as well in just a matter of days.

Add one convenient threat to the palace that suddenly focuses on Rebecca and they realize they can't live without each other, their family members are almost all on board and they will have their happy ever after.

So yes, if you're looking for a light and fluffy romance without too much substance and don't mind a few holes in the plot, then maybe you'll enjoy Alexander and Rebecca. Otherwise, there are much better alternatives out there.

This is book one in a very long series (Alexander has eight siblings, after all). I may give one or two of the next books a try one of these days, to see if there's some improvement.

Happy readings!
