Review: The Book of Life

Book Review: The Book of Life, by Deborah Harkness, 3 stars

In The Book of Life, Diana and Matthew time-travel back from Elizabethan London to make a dramatic return to the present—facing new crises and old enemies. At Matthew’s ancestral home, Sept-Tours, they reunite with the beloved cast of characters from A Discovery of Witches—with one significant exception. But the real threat to their future has yet to be revealed, and when it is, the search for Ashmole 782 and its missing pages takes on even more urgency.

Genre: fantasy/paranormal

Review: Of the three books in the All Souls series that complete the story of Matthew and Diana, this 3rd installment was the one I liked the least. I'm starting to think the author would have been better off wrapping up the story in book one.

I'm very happy Matthew and Diana get their own (and much deserved) happily ever after, but it was seriously hard to keep reading the book until the end. The plot is too complicated, there are too many characters, additional points of view added randomly and a lot of details that make little sense. And yet, here and there, we get this:

“Why do you love me so much, Matthew?” I couldn’t see the attraction, especially not when I was rotund, facedown, and gasping with pain. His response was swift.
“To every question I have ever had, or ever will have, you are the answer.”

So yes, this a book you read (i.e., endure) because you loved book 1 and are desperately rooting for Matthew and Diana's happiness.

Happy readings!
