Review: Throne of the Fallen

Book Review: Throne of the Fallen, by Kerri Maniscalco, 3 stars

The Prince of Envy has never claimed to be a saint. But when a cryptic note arrives at his demon court, signalling the beginning of a deadly game, he knows it will take more than a hint of sin to win. Riddles, hexed objects, anonymous players, nothing will stand in his way.

Camilla is an artist with troubles of her own: a desperate mistake has landed her in debt to a notorious rake. Threatened with ruinous scandal, she is forced to enter a devil's bargain with Envy. A bargain that reveals secrets and ignites passions that neither of them expects.

Together, Envy and Camilla must embark on a perilous journey through the underworld - from glittering demon courts to the sultry vampire realm and beyond - while trying to avoid the most dangerous trap of all: falling in love.

Review: I'm not a huge fan of Throne of the Fallen. Bonus points for such a complicated and original world creation and for such an twisted plot but...
  • it's very, very long (over 600 pages) and after a while I felt like skimming a few pages here and there just to get to the end and move on
  • even though it's book 1 in a series, I felt like there were back stories to some of the characters (especially Envy's brothers) I had missed and some parts were a bit confusion because of that
  • there is such a mix of paranormal and fantasy genres in the plot that it's hard to keep track of every character and every world
  • I would have preferred a toned down language and sex scenes. Instead of blending with the plot, they distracted me from it.
Am I curious about book two in the series? Yes. Do I want to embark into another 500+ book with more of the same characters? Not right now. Maybe some day. If I ever do read it, I'll be sure to post a review here as well.

Happy readings otherwise!
