Review: Blood & Steel

Book Review: Blood & Steel, by Helen Scheuerer, 4 stars

With her death foretold, Althea Zoltaire only has three years to become what she’s always dreamed of being: a warrior legend.

Women are forbidden to wield blades, so she has trained in secret her entire life. Now racing against the clock, she fights to secure her place in the elite guild charged with the protection of the five kingdoms.

The sparring and hazing of the new trainees border on deadly, but even more dangerous is her growing attraction to Wilder Hawthorne, her unwilling warrior chaperone.

All around them, schemes are afoot and darkness looms.

Will Althea pass the perilous initiation test and take her place as a champion of Thezmarr – or will the invading evil snatch away her dream before it starts?

Review: Not as good as Fourth Wing, but close. It took me a while to get into the story and the characters (mostly because the word we land in is not fully explained, not even at the end of the book), and some parts of the plot seemed to move very slowly (especially in the first half of the story). But after a while...I was hooked. Not only by Thea's journey into becoming a Guardian, but also by the way she deals with being the single woman in a men's world, her path towards discovering who she really is, and her relationship with Wilder.

I'm rating with with four stars just because the beauty of the story and the characters isn't really obvious at the beginning. Once or twice I even thought about giving up and moving onto another book. Now I'm very glad I didn't, since I really enjoyed reading it. And because Blood & Steel ends at a sort of a cliffhanger, now of course I need to read the next installment in this The Legends of Thezmarr series (Vows & Ruins). I'll post a review of this second book in the series as soon as I finish it.

Happy readings!
