Review: Arranged

Book Review: Arranged, by Catherine McKenzie, 4 starsBook Review: Arranged, by Catherine McKenzie, 4 stars

In Arranged, author Catherine McKenzie (Spin) looks at love and marriage from a whole new perspective—telling the story of a successful, popular, but somewhat romantically desperate young woman who agrees to let a highly secretive arranged marriage service help her marry a perfect stranger.

Genre: contemporary romance

Publication date: May 2012

Mature content: yes, but nothing overly graphical

Review: I enjoyed this book very much, especially because it brings about a reflection on how people - and women in particular - are often still sensitive to what they believe society expects from them (marriage and children, in this case) and the social pressure they feel when they see their peers achieve those goals and believe they are being left behind.

In addition, there's also some romance in this book, as the arranged marriage turns into a real love story. It's rather nice too, although I felt that the falling in love had not been the same for Anne as it was for Jack. She was committed from the beginning of their marriage, he clearly was not, and I his about face seemed a case of too little too late. Anne forgives him in the end, and supposedly they get their happily ever after, but I was not totally convinced - hence the four stars rating instead of five.

Happy readings!
