Review: Gabriel's Inferno

Book Review: Gabriel's Inferno, by Sylvain Reynard, 1 star

Enigmatic and sexy, Professor Gabriel Emerson is a well-respected Dante specialist by day, but by night he devotes himself to an uninhibited life of pleasure. He uses his notorious good looks and sophisticated charm to gratify his every whim, but is secretly tortured by his dark past and consumed by the profound belief that he is beyond all hope of redemption.

When the sweet and innocent Julia Mitchell enrolls as his graduate student, his attraction and mysterious connection to her not only jeopardizes his career, but sends him on a journey in which his past and his present collide.

An intriguing and sinful exploration of seduction, forbidden love, and redemption, Gabriel’s Inferno is a captivating and wildly passionate tale of one man’s escape from his own personal hell as he tries to earn the impossible—forgiveness and love.

Review: Interesting concept (even if not entirely original), but very weirdly written. That's the only way I can describe this book.

The last part of the book, when it's mostly just Julia and Gabriel, works a bit better. But at the beginning, when you have sometimes two or three different points of view in the same paragraph, is very confusing. Everyone has a POV in the story, even the most random people Julia and/or Gabriel come across as the plot progresses. And trust me, the plot progresses very slowly.

Gabriel's Inferno is actually one of the very few cases where I think the film adaptation is better than the book - at least on screen you understand clearly who the main characters are and it's easier to follow the story. Below you have the link to the official trailer in case you want to check it out:

Gabriel's Inferno is part of a three books series, but unfortunately I don't think I will be reading the other books anytime soon...

Happy readings otherwise!
