Review: Loyalty

Book Review: Loyalty, by Tana Stone, 4 stars

The cocky, high-born cadet is everything I despise and nothing I need. So why did I agree to his deal?

Because it wasn’t a deal, it was blackmail. The arrogant Drexian gave me the choice—throw my friends under the bus or tutor him. Easy choice, even if I suspect he wants more from me than my brains.

Just as I’m getting accustomed to the ancient alien academy and what it means to be a member of the School of Strategy—also called the Assassins—I’m forced to secretly coach a Blade after hours. And I know better than to go back on our deal. You don’t cross the Blades.

But when our lessons take a steamy turn, can I keep my head in the game—and my heart out of it? After all, a hot, brawny warrior like him wouldn’t fall for a brainiac like me, would he?

Then again, maybe he’s the one who should be worried about his heart. You know what they say. Beware of the Assassins.

Loyalty is the second book in Tana Stone’s Warriors of the Drexian Academy series, contains an HEA, and will leave you wanting more cunning Assassins, badass Blades, brilliant Irons, and daring Wings.

Genre: science fiction romance

Publication date: May 2024

Mature content: yes

Review: Loyalty is book two in Tana Stone's Warriors of the Drexian Academy series. Although with different main characters, the story flows from one book to another, so I would recommend starting with book one (Legacy) and reading the series in the correct order.

I absolutely loved Legacy and, in terms of plot, I loved Loyalty just as much. However, I found the writing a bit repetitive in places (especially when page in/page out Torq debates on loyalty to the clan vs. loyalty to the Blades and whether or not he's on the right path because it's nothing of what he expected when he joined the Academy), and the added view points of Volt and Ariana (from book one) are a bit confusing (in one place, it seems they were added just to score one additional sex scene...).

In any case, if you love the genre and can overlook my rantings above, Loyalty is still a great science fiction adventure and romance book. Actually, this series is better than anything I've read before by the author.

And now I really want to read the next book in the series because I've been curious about Vyk since book one...
