Review: Overload Flux

Book Review: Overload Flux, by Carol Van Natta, 4 stars

Luka Foxe can’t let anyone know about his secret mental abilities. Debilitated by their influence when faced with violence, the brilliant forensic investigator now only takes assignments involving theft. But when he has to hunt down a hijacked vaccine for a galaxy-wide pandemic, the tragic first clue is his best friend’s brutal murder.

Nightshift guard Mairwen Morganthur knows she must keep a low profile. The product of illegal genetic alteration, she’s a lethal weapon with no social graces. But when she’s tasked to protect a detective with frightening intuition, she finds herself falling for him even though he could expose her.

Racing to recover the critical cargo, Luka is surprised by his developing feelings for the capable-but-mysterious guard. And Mairwen may have to risk everything by revealing her identity, with deadly mercenaries hot on their tail.

Can the unlikely pair survive an interplanetary conspiracy long enough to save lives and find love?

Review: There were things I liked very much in this book (the action scenes, the sweet romance between Luka and Mairwen), and there were things I didn't like so much. Mostly, I found the plot complicated a bit too much in places, and several details were left unexplained or with little to no follow up. At some point, the story focuses perhaps a bit too much on Luka and Mairwen and how they feel around each other (repeatedly) and we sort of lose the plot thread that got them together in the first place.

The epilogue is also long and confusing, and I'm not sure it's to provide closure to the book or to introduce the next one in the series.

Overall, Overload Flux is pretty good in terms of science fiction and romance, but in my opinion it does not deserve more than four stars.

Overload Flux is part of the Central Galactic Concordance series, but as far as I understand each book contains a stand alone story and different main characters. I haven't read any of the other books in the series.

Happy readings!
