Review: Love at First Spite

Book Review: Love at First Spite, by Anna E. Collins, 4 stars

They say living well is the best revenge. But sometimes, spreading the misery seems a whole lot more satisfying. That’s interior designer Dani Porter’s justification for buying the vacant lot next to her ex-fiancĂ©’s house…the house they were supposed to live in together, before he cheated on her with their Realtor. Dani plans to build a vacation rental that will a) mess with his view and his peace of mind and b) prove that Dani is not someone to be stepped on. Welcome to project Spite House.

That plan quickly becomes complicated when Dani is forced to team up with Wyatt Montego, the handsome, haughty architect at her firm, and the only person available to draw up blueprints. Wyatt is terse and stern, the kind of man who eats his sandwich with a knife and fork. But as they spend time together on- and off-site, Dani glimpses something deeper beneath that hard veneer, something surprising, vulnerable, and real. And the closer she gets to her goal, the more she wonders if winning revenge could mean losing something infinitely sweeter…

Genre: contemporary romance

Publication date: January 2022

Review: I really liked this book. It's fun, and the love story between Dani and Wyatt is sweet, even if it feels a bit one sided here and there (since basically it comes down to the fact that Wyatt was attracted to her since the beginning while she thought the worst of him...).

The only reason I'm rating it with four stars instead of five is because I felt that the spite house theme is taken a bit to the extreme and, at some point, it starts to feel unrealistic. In some places, Dani behaves more like a bratty teenager than a responsible adult.

I also would have loved to hear more about her crafty hobbies and her Etsy side business, especially since they were the reason she wanted the lot of the spite house in the first place, but´, other than the gift she gives Wyatt at the end of the book, there's little follow up there.

In any case, Love at First Spite is a book that will leave you with a smile on your face and I recommend it.

Happy readings!
