Review: The Last Letter

Book Review: The Last Letter, by Rebecca Yarros, 4 stars

Beckett,

If you’re reading this, well, you know the last-letter drill. You made it. I didn’t. Get off the guilt train, because I know if there was any chance you could have saved me, you would have.

I need one thing from you: get out of the army and get to Telluride.

My little sister Ella’s raising the twins alone. She’s too independent and won’t accept help easily, but she has lost our grandmother, our parents, and now me. It’s too much for anyone to endure. It’s not fair.

And here’s the kicker: there’s something else you don’t know that’s tearing her family apart. She’s going to need help.

So if I’m gone, that means I can’t be there for Ella. I can’t help them through this. But you can. So I’m begging you, as my best friend, go take care of my sister, my family.

Please don’t make her go through it alone.

Review: This is another great book by Rebecca Yarros. I read and loved In the Likely Event and I wanted to explore the author's other books too.

While I think The Last Letter is just as well written as In the Likely Event, if not better, it is a thoroughly painful book to read. Most especially if you are a parent. Let's just say that reading this book made me want to hug my kids even tighter every night.

Overall, I loved the story, but it's not your average romance. There's too much pain, too much suffering and definitely not the happily ever after I was expecting. I also didn't like Ella very much for pushing Beckett away the way she did. Yes, he omitted some important facts about his past. but it's not like she wasn't using him and his insurance to cover her daughter's medical expenses while he asked so little in return. I wish she'd been a bit more understanding.

I liked The Last Letter and I recommend it, but conditionally. It's not a book for everyone and you need to be strong to read it until the end without falling apart.

Happy readings!
