Review: The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever

Book Review: The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever, by Julia Quinn, 4 stars

At the age of ten, Miranda Cheever showed no signs of Great Beauty. And even at ten, Miranda learned to accept the expectations society held for her—until the afternoon when Nigel Bevelstoke, the handsome and dashing Viscount Turner, solemnly kissed her hand and promised her that one day she would grow into herself, that one day she would be as beautiful as she already was smart. And even at ten, Miranda knew she would love him forever.

But the years that followed were as cruel to Turner as they were kind to Miranda. She is as intriguing as the viscount boldly predicted on that memorable day—while he is a lonely, bitter man, crushed by a devastating loss. But Miranda has never forgotten the truth she set down on paper all those years earlier—and she will not allow the love that is her destiny to slip lightly through her fingers . . .

Review: The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever is book one in the Bevelstoke series. I actually read book two first (What Happens in London) and then circled around to this one because I was curious about Miranda and Turner's story.

In the end, I didn't like very much the fact that their love story is basically one sided until the very end, and that it takes Miranda almost dying for Turner to finally be able to say out loud that he loves her. That, and the fact that in some places the plot seems to move very, very slowly, are the main reasons why I'm not rating The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever with five stars instead of four.

I am now curious about book three, of course, so I will definitely add it to my (always growing) reading list.

Happy readings,
