Review: Guardian Mate, by Audrey Sharpe

Book Review: Guardian Mate, by Audrey Sharpe, 3 stars

After fleeing the malevolent alien race that wiped out her homeworld, all Libra Hawke wants is a quiet life of obscurity. No danger. No drama. Definitely no surprises. But then the universe crashes Brendan Scott into her — literally — and knocks her world off its axis.

He's human. She's not. She has no business being anywhere near him, not if she wants to conceal her nebula of secrets. But tell that to her traitorous heart.

His curiosity about her past pokes holes in her cover story big enough to fly a starship through, while logic takes a spacewalk every time they touch. Their intense connection indicates he might be her destined mate… if he can accept her alien nature.

And her power.

Genre: Science fiction romance

Publication date: January 2021

Mature content: yes

Review: I really wanted to like this book, but in the end the story felt a bit too flat for me.

First, there's very little science fiction. Save for the fact that we are told Libra isn't human and for the more advanced bits of technology here and there, you could transpose the story to present-day Earth, say it was infused with a bit of paranormal, and no one would notice the difference.

Second, there's almost no plot. Libra and Brendan meet, experience a special connection, have sex and decide to get married (or mated, as you prefer) all in the space of two days. Very little background on both of them (except almost at the very end, when some details are shared) and very little follow up.

I'm rating it with three stars because this seems to be a prequel to Audrey Sharpe's Starhawke series and I haven't read any of her other books, but on a stand alone basis it's not a book I would actively recommend.
