Review: The Scent of Snow

Book Review: The Scent of Snow, by Giovanna Siniscalchi, 3 stars

Amid the snow-covered beauty of the Count of Almoster's estate, Pedro and Anne Daun's love story continues, but this Holiday, their desires are on a collision course. Scarred by a painful past, Pedro guards his heart against fatherhood while Anne's yearning for a child threatens to unravel their perfect marriage.

As the family gathers for a festive celebration, buried secrets set the stage for a winter's tale like no other. When tragedy strikes, and a young boy vanishes into the snowy wilderness, Pedro's courage is tested in ways he never imagined. Together, they must confront their deepest fears and find the true meaning of love, forgiveness, and the magical 'Scent of Snow' that can transform their lives forever.

Will Pedro and Anne's love prove strong enough to weather the storm, or will the snowy landscape forever change the course of their destinies?

Review: This book is not what I expected. I picked it up mostly because of the Portuguese location of the plot. At the time I didn't realize it was really more of a novella than a full sized book and part of a larger series (my bad for not reading all the reviews already on Amazon).

I won't say it can't be read as a stand alone, although insight about the characters and how they came to be together during the Christmas season would have been useful.

But...be prepared for virtually no plot. Most of the story contains Anne and Pedro's tortuous thoughts (about themselves, their past and their marriage) and sex scenes. Only almost at the end there is some action, with Anne's nephews getting lost and Pedro rescuing them. I'm also not sure it's entirely accurate from an historical point of view - not on the language and not on some of the interactions between the characters.

I confess I'm now curious about the previous books in the Winemakers series, so I may give them a try one of these days, but on a stand alone basis The Scent of Snow did not live up to what I think it could have been it's full potential.
