Review: The Unwilling Love

Book Review: The Unwilling Love, Lucy Bowdler, 2 stars, contemporary romance

Straight after nursing school in Winnipeg, Nurse Janice Colby starts her first job at Nootak — only a hundred miles from the North Pole! She won’t feel too isolated, though, as her brother — Constable Raymond Colby Royal Canadian Mounted Police there too.

Wrapped in furs and riding on dog-pulled sledges. Jan knows at once that she will enjoy this new experience among the friendly Eskimos. Unfortunately, there's a splinter of ice in her warm welcome in the shape of handsome Sergeant Philip Anson, the other Mountie on the outpost. He is distinctly cold towards her — but despite his unpleasantness, he melts her heart.. .

Genre: contemporary romance

Publication date: January 1981

Mature content: no

Review: Old and obviously outdated. Not a lot of romance there, to tell the truth. There's a point where Jan suddenly realizes she's in love with Philip (after he kisses her once and apparently regrets it immediately afterwards), but it's just about it right until the very end.

I did find the book interesting from a cultural point of view as it shows the way of life of the Eskimos at the time the story was written, but it's not one I would actively recommend.

Happy readings,
