Review: On the Way to the Wedding

Unlike most men of his acquaintance, Gregory Bridgerton believes in true love. And he is convinced that when he finds the woman of his dreams, he will know in an instant that she is the one. And that is exactly what happened. Except ...

She wasn’t the one. In fact, the ravishing Miss Hermione Watson is in love with another. But her best friend, the ever-practical Lady Lucinda Abernathy, wants to save Hermione from a disastrous alliance, so she offers to help Gregory win her over. But in the process, Lucy falls in love. With Gregory! Except ...

Lucy is engaged. And her uncle is not inclined to let her back out of the betrothal, even once Gregory comes to his senses and realizes that it is Lucy, with her sharp wit and sunny smile, who makes his heart sing. And now, on the way to the wedding, Gregory must risk everything to ensure that when it comes time to kiss the bride, he is the only man standing at the altar …

Review: On the Way to the Wedding is book 8 in the Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn (you can search for the reviews of the previous books in the side bar) and after reading all the other 7 books, I had high expectations for Gregory's story. Unfortunately, I have to say I was a bit disappointed.

On the Way to the Wedding is an OK book, but not much more than that. Maybe if Gregory hadn't "fallen in love" with Hermione at the beginning of the book in exactly the same way he later falls for Lucy, maybe then I would find the story a bit more believable. As it was, no matter how much the professed to love Lucy, I kept going back and thinking: he said the same thing about Hermione a week ago...

Hermione's story is equally unbelievable. She's in love with her father's secretary and has never wavered in her love no matter how many men flirt with her. And then, in the space of a few days, she turns first to Gregory as a suitable prospect, and then to Lucy's brother - whom she ends up marrying after being found in a compromising situation. No one hears about her never ending love for the poor secretary who wrote her treasured letters and suddenly she's madly in love with her new husband.

Of course if you're read the other books, you'll not be wanting to miss Gregory's happy ever after (after all, he was still a young boy when it all started and we've almost seen him grow up along the series). But looking at it on a stand alone basis, On the Way to the Wedding is not a book I would actively recommend.
