Review: Ignite

Book Review: Ignite, by Tana Stone, 2 stars

Now that everyone on Earth knows about the Drexians—and their need for human mates—women have been falling all over themselves to volunteer. But not me.
Oh, I’m eager to go to the holographic space station where human brides are taken for their fantasy weddings and honeymoons. But I’m there to work, not fall in love. If the captain of the ship will let me do my job.
The last thing I need is some cocky alien who questions my abilities. Even if he is a hot Drexian warrior who looks at me like I’m a snack.
Kalex may be acting captain of the new Love Boat being built on the outskirts of the galaxy, but that doesn’t mean he calls the shots. At least not when it comes to the design of the space station. That’s my job. A job he makes more difficult at every turn.
When things start to go wrong on the station, Kalex and I are forced to work together to save the station. But as tempers fly and sparks ignite, can we save the Boat and ourselves from the deadly Kronock plot?

Review: Unfortunately, this book did not work for me.

First, even though it's book one in a series, there's a lot of background that apparently comes from a previous series (that I haven't read), so for the first few pages I felt I had landed in the middle of an on-going story and was pretty much lost.

Second, most of the characters - even the main ones - are shallow and often silly. Maybe some were supposed to be funny, but I couldn't connect with them in any way.

Third, there's really no romance involved. After a few sex scenes Zoey and Kalex decided they can't live apart - and that's basically it.

Fourth, except for a few aliens wreaking havoc here and there, there's little science fiction too. If you took out the setting of a space station under construction and replaced it, let's say, for a building under construction on Earth, you could get almost the same story.

Not poorly written exactly, but definitely not a book I would consider recommending. Nor am I particularly interested in the others in the series, at least not right now.

Happy readings otherwise,
