Review: Fortune's Pawn

Book Review: Fortune's Pawn, by Rachel Bach, 4 stars

Devi Morris isn't your average mercenary. She has plans. Big ones. And a ton of ambition. It's a combination that's going to get her killed one day -- but not just yet.

That is, until she just gets a job on a tiny trade ship with a nasty reputation for surprises. The Glorious Fool isn't misnamed: it likes to get into trouble, so much so that one year of security work under its captain is equal to five years everywhere else. With odds like that, Devi knows she's found the perfect way to get the jump on the next part of her Plan. But the Fool doesn't give up its secrets without a fight, and one year on this ship might be more than even Devi can handle.

Genre: science fiction

Review: It took me a while to get into this story. I didn't really like Devi as the main character and in those first few pages I had no idea of where the story was going - it didn't even feel like there was really going to be a story worth reading. At some point, I even debated giving up and just moving on to another book.

In the end, I stuck to Fortune's Pawn and eventually I did get hooked into the story, mostly out of curiosity about the Glorious Fool and its crew - a supposedly cursed ship where everyone is keeping secrets.

I still think the story is told in a weird way sometimes, and I still don't like Devi all that much. The romance between Devi and Rupert is kind of sweet, but felt a bit rushed. And, of course, Fortune's Pawn ends at the worst cliffhanger, so of course you need to move on to book 2 if you want to learn what happens next. But all in all, for better or worse, Fortune's Pawn does get you hooked after a while and it's hard to put it down.

Happy readings,
