Ruolan the Retriever, best locator of stolen objects on her moon, dreams of joining the Star Guardians, elite law enforcers who fly to the ends of the galaxy to catch criminals and protect humanity. Falling for a hunky but aloof Star Guardian named Mikolos? That was not part of the plan. But when she joins forces with him to retrieve his captain’s stolen orders, they’re soon embroiled in a deadly adventure, one that leaves her and Mikolos depending on each other for their lives. As the reserved Star Guardian comes to respect her, she finds herself wondering if she can have him and still achieve her dream.

Review: Mikolos is a short novella from the Star Guardians series by Ruby Lionsdrake, and you can download it for free via the author's Facebook page here.  Goodreads identifies it as #3.5 in the series, but having read the 6 original books in a row, that timing seems a bit off. After Ru is aboard the Falcon 8, there is a reference to Juanita (from book 1), but not to any of the other women that should be in the ship at the same time, which was kind of weird.

As novellas go, this one was pretty fast paced. but my main issue with it is that I found it very unrealistic - from one sex scene that I felt was completely misplaced, to Ru's rushed recruitment to the Star Guardians - if they recruited people just like that, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't really be an elite law enforcement organization. So, three stars for the originality of the background plot, but overall it doesn't add all that much to the whole of the series and is not worth to read as a stand alone.

You can also read my reviews of books one (Orion), two (Treyjon), three (Sagitta), four (Hierax), five (Zakota) and six (Ariston).

Happy readings,
