Review: Rattlesnake Road

Book Review: Rattlesnake Road, by Amanda McKinney, 4 stars

After leaving her posh NYC life behind, fashion editor Grey Dalton escapes to the small, southern town of Berry Springs to pick up the broken pieces of her life. On impulse, she purchases a rumored-to-be-haunted house where she finds herself thrown into decade-old murder mystery, and onto the rocky road of recovery and self-discovery. Men are the last thing on her mind—until she meets a tattooed cowboy and a dashing businessman. One will steal her heart, the other, her soul.

Genre: romantic suspense

Publication date: August 2021

Mature content: yes

Review: Rattlesnake Road is another of Amanda McKinney's Small Town Thrillers, and it pairs with Redemption Road (read my review of Redemption Road), but although the two books are interconnected they are two separate stories and can be perfectly read as stand alones.

Of the two, Rattlesnake Road has the best suspense, in my opinion - just when I thought that part of the story was going nowhere, a totally unexpected twist brought it forward, and nothing was exactly as I had expected it to be.

As to the romance, yes, it's good. But I really disliked Grey as the main female character. I've realised by now that Amanda McKinney is the queen of dark, twisted characters, the ones that have hit rock bottom in their lives, and as such I could have accepted Grey's alcoholism and her despair at suddenly losing her husband, her baby and her job. But her casual involvement with one man (Lucas) when she's already lusting after another (Declan) was a bit over the top for me.

Also, there are a few flaws in the plot - especially, in my opinion, the fact that Grey launches a business making baby products at home and starts selling them with no mention of a certification or a license, which I'm pretty sure she would need.

All in all, it's still a wonderful book and rantings above aside, it's still recommended if you love the genre.

Happy readings!
