Review: Her Majesty My Love

Book Review: Her Majesty My Love, by Maya Banks, 3 stars

Princess Isabella Chastaine holds the fate of her tiny island nation in her hands. Literally. Escaping the men who murdered her parents, she flees to England with a sacred map outlining the location of ancient relics—items necessary for a new ruler to ascend the throne, items buried deep within the granite caves of her homeland.

Simon Rothmore, Earl of Merrick, has faithfully served the English crown since his recruitment into an elite secret agency. His newest task, deciphering the puzzling assassinations of the royal family of Leaudor, leads him to the only remaining member...Princess Isabella.

Betrayed by those closest to her and deeply suspicious of possible English involvement, Isabella vows to return to her country and seek justice for her family. She will allow no one, especially not an arrogant English earl, to interfere in her quest.

But love has a way of uniting even the most unlikely souls. Together, they travel across two countries, encounter painful betrayals, complete a mystical quest, and forge a new destiny neither had dreamed possible.

Review:  I really wanted to like this book, but unfortunately I found it way too confusing. I put it down as historical fiction, but there's a lot of fantasy thrown in - and not just because of the fabricated kingdom of Leaudor.

But even as fantasy fiction goes, this one is pretty inconsistent. In one place the people of Leaudor come across as non-christians, but then there are lots of Christian references, even in their speech. Then it is said that the kingdom does not necessarily pass from father to son (or daughter) and that anyone can be king (or queen) as long as they complete a mystical quest for the crown jewels, but in practice you really don't see that in the book - actually, the plot wouldn't work if that was the case.

And the list goes on and on. The overall idea of the story has potential and the romance between Simon and Isabella is nice, but in my opinion Her Majesty My Love needed a more consisten background where everything could fit in together.

Side note: Her Majesty My Love is book 2 in the Vault Collection series but I read it as a stand alone and had no issues.

Happy readings otherwise!
