Book Review: Under the Knife, by Tess Gerritsen, 4 stars

✩✩

For attorney David Ransom, it begins as an open-and-shut case: malpractice. Then Dr. Kate Chesne storms into his office, daring him to seek out the truth—that she’s being framed. When another patient turns up dead, David starts to believe her. Somewhere in the Honolulu hospital, a killer walks freely. And now David finds himself asking the same questions Kate is desperate to have answered.

Who is next—and why?

Genre: romantic suspense

Review: Sometimes I read books with raving reviews on Amazon and find myself wondering what all those readers saw that I didn't. In the case of Under the Knife, the exact opposite happened.

I saw a lot of one and two stars reviews and honestly expected a lot worse. Yes, the book is outdated (that's a common complaint from a lot of reviewers) - it's from the early 90s, so of course it's outdated. Yes, there's a more recent Kindle edition and the author could have updated it, but it was pointless to do so. There's a time and place for everything and books are meant to reflect the time and place they were written in - there are no motor cars and no cell phones in Pride and Prejudice and I haven't yet seen anyone complaining it's outdated.

Besides, updating the book would make a large part of the plot meaningless - if Kate had a cell phone on hand the ending of the book would probably have been completely different.

The romance is not amazing and the kind of instant attraction between David and Kate is portrayed in a slightly weird way, but I found the suspense quite intriguing. Right up to the last pages I was convinced I knew who the culprit was - and I was wrong. There are many twists and turns in the book and while some of the wording could maybe be a bit more polished, Under the Knife is worth reading for the suspense plot alone.

Happy readings!
