Review: Confessions of a Domestic Goddess

Book Review: Confessions of a Domestic Goddess, by Deborah Schneider, 2 stars

What do you do if your life is a fixer-upper?

TV lifestyle expert Bailey Holmes is about to take her show, Domestic Goddess, to the big time. With a major network deal, a new sponsor, and series of shows around her upcoming wedding, she’s poised to become a media darling.

When an ugly breakup and unflattering podcast with a huge audience threaten her future, she escapes to her family on Horseshoe Island in Puget Sound. They agree to let her renovate their rustic lodge for her TV show with one stipulation: Max Cumberland, the carpenter they’ve hired, is part of the deal.

Despite clashing over plans for the lodge, Bailey discovers a sexy sizzle of attraction between her and Max that quickly goes from simmer to steamy. But once the lodge is renovated and the show has finished filming, will there be a chance for the couple to stay together, or will Bailey be off the island for good?

Review: Combining romance and crafts, Confessions of a Domestic Goddess had all the potential to be, in my opinion, a great book. Unfortunately, I found myself waddling through a lukewarm love story, with two main characters who have little in common. Bailey was really hard to connect to. She's able to turn most things she touches into a disaster - which doesn't really help when the author is trying to convince us she's crafty - and I really disliked her attitude towards children. I think that part was supposed to be funny but it just felt awkward and, frankly, even a little bit rude. Max, for all his male model looks, almost fades into the furniture - except maybe in bed.

Potential? Lots. Reality? I was truly disappointed, and can't bring myself to recommend.

Happy readings!
