Review: Vampire

Book Review: Vampire, a Dark Protectors Novella, by Rebecca Zanetti, 2 stars

Dr. Mariana Lopez has finally stopped bailing friends out of difficult situations. Well, except for substituting as the leader for another anger management group, pitching in as a campaign strategist for a prospective sheriff, and babysitting three dogs. Even with such a full life, she can feel the danger around her—a sense that something isn’t right. Nightmares harass her, until the real thing comes to life, and only the dark and sexy male sitting in her group can save her. However, with safety comes a price she might not be willing to pay.

Raine Maxwell is one of the Maxwells out of Montana, which means he's not only one of the most deadly vampires alive, but his path is set and his mate has been chosen for him. To save him—to continue his line. Unfortunately, his mate is an enhanced human female who has no idea of her abilities, of his species, or of her future. He’d like to lead her gently into this new world, but his people aren’t the only ones who’ve found her, which puts her into more danger than she can imagine. Plus, in order to follow his laws, he only has one week to convince her that immortality with him is what she wants—and needs.

Review: This story did not work for me. First, not matter what Amazon tells you, it's not a stand alone novella. You land in the middle of a story, with characters, especially the secondary ones, that evidently know each-other and have past history together.

We're made to believe these people are vampires, demons and the like, but honestly? Other than what the author tells us and a few short appearances of fangs, the whole story could involve only regular human beings and work just the same.

The writing is also very repetitive in places. To Raine, Mariana smells like peaches, tastes like peaches and looks like peaches. The man has no other words to describe her. And there are synonyms to "moron", you don't need to have all the characters using that same word page in page out.

And after all the idiotic (or should I say moronic?) things Raine pulls through, having Mariana fall into bed and mate him, just like that, was totally unconvincing. Even if she's doing it for the greater good and all that.

Overall, I don't recommend this novella. I will try to read one of the full books by the same author to see if the issues I had were more connected to length than anything else, but I'm not too hopeful. Which is a shame, because even though I'm not a huge fan of vampires, a good vampire book usually captures my attention.

Happy readings!
