Review: One Dance with a Duke

Book Review: One Dance with a Duke, by Tessa Dare, 3 stars

A handsome and reclusive horse breeder, Spencer Dumarque, the fourth Duke of Morland, has a reputation as the dashing "Duke of Midnight." Each evening he selects one lady for a breathtaking midnight waltz. But none of the ladies of the ton catch his interest for long, until Lady Amelia d'Orsay tries her luck.

In an effort to get the Duke to forgive her brother's debts, Amelia claims the duke's dance. But she is playing a dangerous game with a notorious rake...

Review: This is an older book by Tessa Dare but even if I love the author, I don't feel this is one of her best books - I'm used to laughing our loud at least at every other page, but most of One Dance with a Duke actually made me cringe.

The plot is kind of original, even if still a bit predictable, but I felt the characters weren't always consistent, and I found the story complicated a bit too much towards the end. There's also a suspense/murder subplot - which actually what initiates the book - but which is revisited only once in a while and usually when Amelia wants to create a rift (another) with Spencer by accusing him of murder (even though she married him the very next day to the unfortunate event).

Since One Dance with a Duke is book one in the series, I expect the murder to be solved in one of the next instalments and despite the fact that Amelia and Spencer are not my favorite couple I do intend to go through the following two books.

Happy readings!
