While fleeing an arranged betrothal to a heartless lord, Lady Isabelle becomes injured and lost. Rescued by a young peasant man, she hides her identity as a noblewoman for fear of reprisal from the peasants who are bitter and angry toward the nobility.
Cole Warwick cannot turn his back on a person in need and soon finds himself falling for Izzy, the gentle and beautiful runaway who is mending in his cottage. As the leader of an imminent uprising against the nobility, he tries to resist his growing feelings for Izzy to protect her from the dangerous life he’s chosen. But the longer she stays, the more he hopes she’ll never leave.
When Izzy’s true identity is revealed, Cole feels betrayed. With the rebellion underway, can Cole forgive Izzy and find a way to save her from an unhappy marriage? Or will he and his peasant army be destroyed before he has the chance to fight for the people and the woman he loves?

Review: A Worthy Rebel is a sort of fairly tale with a twist. Izzy is a noblewoman on the run to escape marriage to a violent man. Cole is a peasant, but an educated one (at least when compared with his peers): he can read and write and knows how to handle several weapons - though the reason for this is explained later in the story, I'm not going to spoil your surprise.

Coming from such different worlds, Cole and Izzy meet by chance and love flourishes between them. But Izzy hasn't told Cole exactly who she is, and when the truth finally comes out it's devastating for all those involved - and for some innocent bystanders too. There is of course a happy ending, but both Cole and Izzy have to suffer to get there.

A Worthy Rebel is written in the same compelling style as all other Jody Hedlund's books but I found a couple of contradicting details in the plot and also the quick way Cole and Izzy fall in love threw me off a bit. While they are both looking for more than exterior beauty in one another, their attraction is purely physical from the start and, to be honest, I wasn't convinced of their love until much later in the story. It was just too much too fast.

These are the two reasons I'm rating A Worthy Rebel with four stars instead of five, though it is still a sweet, clean historical romance you are bound to love.
