Review: Someone to Trust

Book Review: Someone to Trust, by Mary Balogh, 5 stars

✩✩

After her husband's passing, Elizabeth Overfield decides that she must enter into another suitable marriage. That, however, is the last thing on her mind when she meets Colin Handrich, Lord Hodges, at the Westcott Christmas house party. She simply enjoys his company as they listen to carolers on Christmas Eve, walk home from church together on Christmas morning, and engage in a spirited snowball fight in the afternoon. Both are surprised when their sled topples them into a snowbank and they end up sharing an unexpected kiss. They know there is no question of any relationship between them, for she is nine years older than he.
They return to London the following Season, both committed to finding other, more suitable matches. Still they agree to share one waltz at each ball they attend. This innocuous agreement proves to be one that will topple their worlds, as each dance steadily ensnares them in a romance that forces the two to question what they are willing to sacrifice for love. . . .

Genre: historical romance

Mature content: nothing too graphic

Review: I loved this book. Both the story and the characters have amazing depth and it's almost impossible to put the book down after the first few pages. In addition (or maybe because of), Someone to Trust passes on all the right messages - that everyone deserves a second chance, and that sometimes you need yo forgive and forget (or at least forgive), let the past stay in the past, in order to take advantage of your future.

I especially loved the fact the Elizabeth is nine years older than Colin - it's unusual compared to most mainstream romance novels and, again, a good message to pass on.

Someone to Trust is book 5 in the Westcott series and because I haven't yet read any of the previous books, at first glance I felt a bit overwhelmed by the number of secondary characters and all their complicated ties, but after a while I got used to it and I can safely say Someone to Trust can be read as a stand alone (as I loved it so much, though, I plan to go back and read the other books in the series). Recommended.

Happy readings,
