Review: Sable Peak

Book Review: Sable Peak, by Devney Perry, 4 stars

For four years Vera Gallagher's life was anything but normal and she refused to remember the years before that.

The past is a painful wound and life is fragile . . . Her mother taught her that. Now, she’s determined not to waste a moment of her newfound freedom.

Mateo Eden’s handsome. Charming. Witty. And he loves his family the way Vera loves-with her whole heart.

Some could consider her crush on Mateo Eden wasted time. Or call her a fool for loving a man who hasn't shown her a crumb of interest. Still, to Vera, it's Mateo or nothing.

Maybe he'll never notice her. Maybe she's just too damaged to find that normal life she desperately craves. Maybe her secrets will always keep them apart. But Vera will love him anyway. Whether Mateo realizes it or not.

Genre: contemporary romance

Review: Sable Peak is the sixth and last book in The Edens series and closely follows Indigo RidgeJuniper HillGarnet FlatsJasper Vale and Crimson River

In terms of writing, and even romance, Sable Peak is just as good as the others in the series. The only thing I didn't like about the story was the fact that Mateo doesn't notice Vera until she kisses him on a drunken whim. It doesn't seem fair that she's been in love with him forever and lost hope of him ever knowing that, and then suddenly he's head over heels just because she took that first step.

So, while I did like the book, I couldn't shake the feeling that Mateo started to chase Vera more out of some sense of obligation or guilt than actual interest. Then he did fall in love with her, but that beginning was a bit unconvincing.

Note also that even though technically each book in the series can be read as a stand alone, my advice remains to read them all in the correct order to keep track of all the secondary characters and past events.

Happy readings!
