Review: Cold Truth

Book Review: Cold Truth, by Toni Anderson, 4 stars

Librarian and amateur sleuth Rowena Smith never expected her search for her biological father to end in murder. But when her research leads her to a bloody crime scene and the card of FBI Supervisory Special Agent Kurt Montana, she makes a desperate call for help.

Kurt, a hardened FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader, is ready to head home after a failed undercover op—until Rowena’s voice stops him cold. Minutes later, the flight he should have been on crashes, killing everyone onboard. Kurt knows one thing: Rowena just saved his life.

Now they're on the run through southern Africa, hunted by powerful, unknown enemies who will stop at nothing to keep the truth buried. Forced into hiding, they fake a relationship to stay one step ahead—but their chemistry is all too real.

As danger mounts and secrets unravel, their fake romance turns into something raw, intense, and deeply personal.

Review: Cold Truth is the 6th book in the Cold Justice - Most Wanted series, and features the much awaited (at least from my side) story of what happened to Kurt Montana. I loved it and, at the same time, I was oddly disappointed.

What I liked:
- the way this book fits in seamlessly with the previous/parallel stories of the other books in the series
- the romance between Kurt and Row
- the action scenes almost at the very end of the book, which injected some much needed life into the plot

What I didn't like so much:
- plot inconsistencies (such as when a hotel clerk looks up for the correct postage on line at the same time there is a country-wide blackout affecting cell towers, internet and even landlines) and a few unrealistic details (such as well equipped first aid kits in the middle of nowhere).
-  the fact that the plot is more or less fast paced at the beginning and the end of the book but stalls a lot in the middle

Also, keep in mind that each new book becomes harder to ready as a stand alone as the story progresses, and this one is particularly difficult. Even having read all the previous books I had some trouble remembering who was who and all the details of the background stories and events.

Still, a good addition to the series - and, of course, I will now be waiting for the next one (Cold Heat, coming in May 2026)...

Happy readings!
