After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there's no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty. Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it's impossible to know who to trust.
Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves - her dragons, her family, her home, and him.
Even if it means keeping a secret so big, it could destroy everything.
They need an army. They need power. They need magic. And they need the one thing only Violet can find - the truth.
But a storm is coming... and not everyone can survive its wrath.

Review: Wow. Just wow. I waited a long time for this book, read it in just a couple of days, and I'm having a hard time writing a review. Because the suspense. The angst. The rooting for Xaden and Violet and feeling like it may be a lost cause. It's all almost too much.
Despite all that, I loved to follow Violet along the way. The story is told mostly from her point of view this time, and only at the end you get some alternate POVs, not only from Xaden but from other characters too (including their interactions with their respective dragons, which are always fun to follow). And yes, no matter who or what Xaden is now or becomes later, he's still the best book boyfriend ever and I'm still on his side.
Like the previous ones in the series, this is not a book you just read. This is a book you live in. And that's why you can't stop until you reach the last page.
And when you do, you feel bereft. Because that's not how it's supposed to end. Or at least you hope it's not.
So now we need another book, the next in the series. As fast as possible, please.
And while we don't get that, I've restarted Fourth Wing (again) because I'm still not ready to part with Xaden and Violet just yet.
Please note that Onyx Storm is book 3 in The Empyrean series and is not a stand alone book in any way. If you want to read it, you need to start with the first book in the series and read them all in order. You can also read my reviews of Fourth Wing and Iron Flame.
Happy readings!
