Review: How Not to Chaperon a Lady

Book Review: How Not to Chaperon a Lady, by Virginia Heath, 3 stars

Chaperoning Charity Brookes while she’s on a singing tour should be easy for Griffith Philpot—he’s spent his whole life sparring with her over her flighty ways! But as he discovers that she’s much more than the impetuous girl he thought he knew, a passion ignites between them… Sharing a steamy kiss leaves him torn—he’s supposed to be responsible for guarding her virtue!

Genre: historical romance

Publication date: September 2021

Mature content: yes

Review: When I read the synopsis, I was intrigued by this book. Unfortunately, after finishing I feel disappointed.

First, Charity and Griff don't spar. They argue and throw tantrums like three year olds.

Second, if Griff discovers there's more to Charity, it doesn't show neither in his actions nor in his words. Yes, apparently at some point he seems to realize he's been in love with her since he was ten, but if anything, he treats her even worse than before. He thinks she has slept with a lot of men and believes she's hunting for a husband high up in the nobility - and something along the same lines goes on even after they are married and he has proof that at least he was wrong about her having slept with other men.

And is Charity any better? Nope, not really. She's a really annoying character and I never could connect with her, not even to commiserate the way Griff sometimes treats her.

So while I have loved very much several other books I've read by this author, How Not to Chaperon a Lady is sadly not one of them and I can't bring myself to recommend it in any way.

Happy readings otherwise,
