Review: Off-Grid Living

Book Review: Off-Grid Living, by Ben Rinner, 4 stars

Do you dream of leaving the “real world” behind and leading a simpler life? More and more people are choosing to live off grid, growing their own food, and providing their independent electricity. Achieving this life transformation may seem daunting, but it’s the ideal path to a calmer, more peaceful existence.

Some people choose the off-grid way of life to escape from technology and the city, while others want to live minimally or even prepare for disaster. Farmers, preppers, conservationists, and tiny house enthusiasts unite in their appreciation for off-the-grid living. No matter what your personal reason is, achieving this lifestyle means total independence and freedom.

The options for living off-grid are endless—but it does take knowledge, skills, and planning. You may picture yourself living in a cabin, yurt, tiny home, or alternative homes such as shipping containers. Whatever the case, you’ll need to choose the location, understand the costs, and provide food, water, power, and plumbing. If you have a family, you may also have to consider your children’s education!

Off-Grid Living is the perfect guide for anyone considering this path. With detailed tips and information on everything from laws and taxes to hunting and fishing, this thorough book will take your off-grid life from a pleasant daydream to your blissful reality.

Review: I downloaded this book for free from Amazon a while ago, but only now I got round to finish reading it.

While I'm not exactly looking to live completely off-grid any time soon (or ever), there are a few areas I want to learn more about (container gardening to grow a few vegetables, solar power and food preserving methods, for example).

In found this guide very easy to read, and containing all relevant information for beginners (although I expect someone wanting to go off-grid would probably need additional detail). There's a lot of information on the costs of living off-grid, but I would take it with a grain of salt, as the book is almost two years old at this point and it's very likely costs have changed by now.

Overall, this is a great beginners guide and pretty good even if you're not looking to completely change your lifestyle and go off-grid.

Happy readings!
