Review: Hope Floats

Book Review: Hope Floats, by Joanne Phillips, 4 stars

Emily Weaver doesn’t believe in soul-mates, or being a ‘free spirit’. She believes in following the rules, working hard, and most importantly, she believes in keeping her feet firmly on the ground. So when Emily inherits a beautiful canal boat, her first reaction is complete panic – there’s no way Emily can set foot on a boat, although she can’t confess the true reason, not even to her closest friends ...

Along with her brother’s beloved boat, Free Spirit, comes a skipper to help her relocate it – the gruffly handsome, Jack. Taking an instant dislike to him, Emily resolves to avoid all complications and keep her comfortable, city life on an even keel. Jack can move the boat without Emily on board. But her brother’s perfectly laid plans for the journey tug at her heart strings, and Jack’s constant jibes press buttons she didn’t know she had, and in one crazy unplanned moment, Emily finds herself aboard Free Spirit, ready for the trip of a lifetime.

Now it’s either sink or swim: Emily and Jack are stuck with each other whether they like it or not. Because on the waterways, if you don’t pull together, someone is going to go under ...

Review: Hope Floats is a fun, romantic read. I found the plot fairly original and on a setting that I'd never really read about before: the English water channels. I loved learning about them, about the people that actually live in boats either on the marinas or wandering through the channels, etc.

The romance between Emily and Jack was kind of expected but still sweet. My only concern is that the plot seemed to move very, very slowly in some places. Otherwise, Hope Floats is still a great book and worth reading for the originality of the story itself.

Happy readings!
