Book Review: The Runaway Bride, by Jody Hedlund, 5 stars

✩✩

Wealthy Arabella Lawrence flees to British Columbia on a bride ship still wearing the scars of past mistakes. One of the few single women in the boomtown, she immediately has suitors, but she is determined not to find herself trapped again by a poor choice.
Vying for her hand are two very different men. Lieutenant Richard Drummond is a gentleman in the Navy and is held in high esteem. Peter Kelly is the town's baker and has worked hard to build a thriving business. He and Drummond not only compete for Arabella's affections, but clash over their views of how the natives should be treated in the midst of a smallpox outbreak.
As Arabella begins to overcome her fears, she discovers someone in dire need--a starving girl abandoned by her tribe. Intent on helping the girl, Arabella leans on Peter's advice and guidance. Will she have the wisdom to make the right decision or will seeking what's right cost both her and Peter everything?

Review: The Runaway Bride is an amazing book and I would rate it with 6 stars if I could. It's even better than book 1 in the series (A Reluctant Bride) and I loved that one too. Actually, I believe I have yet to read a book by Jody Hedlund I don't love.

At first I was a bit irked with Arabella for always thinking about her position in society and not the realities of life, but I know I was seeing her actions and thoughts from my modern lens. At the time, that was all she had and it's why she wavered so much in between keeping all that she thought mattered versus venturing into the unknown.

I cried at the end of the book, and it wasn't just because of Arabella and Pete. I won't share any spoilers, because, like good wine, The Runaway Bride needs to be tried and tasted, but the whole of the story - and that goes beyond the romantic part of it - is just beautiful and deserves praise.

There were one or two details in the plot I felt were left unresolved, but I expect we'll hear about them in book three - which I can't wait to read!

The Runaway Bride can, bottom line, be read as a stand alone - but you should still not miss book 1 because it's great too.

I can't recommend The Runaway Bride enough, especially for lovers of clean romance with a Christian background.

Happy readings,
