Review: What Happens Now?

✩✩

After eight years together, Lil Bailey thought she’d already found ‘the one’ – that is, until he dumped her for a blonde twenty-something colleague. So she does what any self-respecting singleton would do: swipes right, puts on her best bra and finds herself on a first date with a handsome mountaineer called Max. What’s the worst that can happen?
Well it’s pretty bad actually. First Max ghosts her and then, after weeing on a stick (but mostly her hands), a few weeks later Lil discovers she’s pregnant. She’s single, thirty-one and living in a thimble-sized flat in London, it’s hardly the happily-ever-after she was looking for.

Lil’s ready to do the baby-thing on her own – it can’t be that hard, right? But she should probably tell Max, if she can track him down. Surely he’s not that Max, the highly eligible, headline-grabbing son of Lord and Lady Rushbrooke, currently trekking up a mountain in South Asia? Oh, maybe he wasn’t ignoring Lil after all…

Genre: contemporary romance

Review: I loved the dynamics of What Happens Now?. It's definitely not your main stream romance novel, as things happen a bit backwards in this book - first there's one near blind date, then there's an unexpected pregnancy and finally, after running through an obstacle course, Lil and Max finally get as close as they can to their happily ever after.

What Happens Now? is well written, the story is engrossing and once I got into the gist of it, I couldn't out in down.

There are a couple of issues, though, that lead me to rate it with four stars instead of five. First is the fact that Lil and Max meet in a pub after connecting on a dating app and have unprotected sex on that same night. Now, for the plot to unfold the way it does it's necessary for Lil to get pregnant - but I don't think passing the message that two informed adults should forego protection (just because she says she's on the pill and he believes her) was the right choice here.

My second issue was the graphic nature of the sex scenes (and language). I didn't think it fit well either with the story or with the characters.

But if you can overlook these details, you are left with a funny, heartwarming book about love, friendship and making the best of what life throws at you.

Happy readings,
