Book review: Passion on Park Avenue, by Lauren Layne, 4 stars

For as long as she can remember, Bronx-born Naomi Powell has had one goal: to prove her worth among the Upper East Side elite—the same people for which her mom worked as a housekeeper. Now, as the strongminded, sassy CEO of one of the biggest jewelry empires in the country, Naomi finally has exactly what she wants—but it’s going to take more than just the right address to make Manhattan’s upper class stop treating her like an outsider.

The worst offender is her new neighbor, Oliver Cunningham—the grown son of the very family Naomi’s mother used to work for. Oliver used to torment Naomi when they were children, and as a ridiculously attractive adult, he’s tormenting her in entirely different ways. Now they find themselves engaged in a battle-of-wills that will either consume or destroy them…

Review: I loved reading Passion on Park Avenue. It's funny, fast paced and heartwarming. Given that my own father suffered with Alzheimer's, I may have a soft spot for Oliver and all the effort he's putting into helping his father and giving him a life as close to normal as possible under the circumstances.

I had only one issue with the ploy, but it's sort of a major one and the main reason behind the 4-stars rating. For the plot to work Oliver can't recognize Naomi as his childhood nemesis, and in the book he doesn't, not until he's finally confronted with the facts almost at the very end.

But I found it strange that he didn't get at least a hint, a suspicion. Naomi recognizes him on the spot the first time she sees him after 20 years. While he doesn't have even a flicker of dejà-vu. She has the same first name, same heir color...I would have expected at least a comment along the lines of "funny, I used to know a girl named Naomi too, and she lived right in this building..." But nothing. Zero. Nada. And I, to be honest, found it weird.

This being said, Passion on Park Avenue is still a good book and will account for a few well spent hours (especially if you're not as picky as me with your book plots). I'll still be waiting for the next one in the series.

Happy readings,
