Review: Josh and Hazel's Guide to Not Dating

Book Review: Josh and Hazel's Guide to Not Dating, by Christina Lauren, 5 stars

 ✩✩

Hazel Camille Bradford knows she's a lot to take - and frankly, most men aren't up to the challenge. If her army of pets and taste for the absurd don't send them running, her lack of filter and tendency to say exactly the wrong thing will. Their loss. Not everyone can handle a Hazel.
Josh Im has known Hazel since college. From the first night they met - when she gracelessly threw up on his shoes - to when she sent him an unintelligible email while in a post-surgical haze, Josh has always thought of Hazel more as a spectacle than a peer. But now, ten years later, after a cheating girlfriend has turned his life upside down, going out with Hazel is a breath of fresh air.
Not that Josh and Hazel date. At least, not each other. Because setting each other up on progressively terrible double blind dates means there's nothing between them . . . right?

Review: I loved this book. It's funny and heartwarming at the same time, and you just can't put it down.

Josh and Hazel met on and off in college. They never dated but somehow each of their meetings is memorable in a way - actually, mostly in a disastrous way. And mostly because Hazel attracts problems and compromising situations like no other. But this means that they never forget each other either - Hazel sort of worships Josh and he still saves the e-mails she sent him while clearly drunk - if this sounds bad, I assure you it's not. It's actually sweet when you read it.

After several years with no contact, they meet again and decide to be best friends. Their blind double-dates are hilarious, as is the fact that they are completely oblivious to the reality that they are perfect for each other. In a way, Hazel and Josh embark on a trip to self-awareness - while dating other people they eventually come to the inevitable conclusion that no one is better for Hazel than Josh, and vice versa. Hazel is wild, but she has such a big heart, that all her extravagance is easily overlooked. And quiet, poised Josh, is the yin to her yang.

Josh & Hazel's Guide to Not Dating is the best of companies. I was sad to see it end and I totally recommend it.

Happy readings,
