Book Review: Breath of Scandal, by Sandra Brown, 4 stars

 ✩✩

On a rainy Southern night, Jade Sperry endured a young woman's worst nightmare at the hands of three local hell-raisers. Robbed of her youthful ideals and at the center of scandal and tragedy, Jade ran as far and as fast as she could. But she never forgot the sleepy "company town" where every man, woman, and child was dependent on one wealthy family. And she never forgot their spoiled son, who, with his two friends, changed her life forever. Someday, somehow, she'd return, exact a just revenge -- and free herself from fear, and the powerful family that could destroy her.

Review: Breath of Scandal is one of Sandra Brown's older books, and as such I was a bit afraid of what I was going to find when I started it. I often stumble upon some of my favorite author's early works and end up sorely disappointed.

That was not the case with Breath of Scandal - yes, it is outdated by now, as the story pre-dates cell phones, GPS and a lot of the modern details we take for granted today, Not to mention that the main male character has a mustache, something I've rarely seen in more recent romance novels. The story, however, it thoroughly interesting - a gripping tale of crime, suspense, lust, corruption, small town lives, second chances and, above all, a woman's quest for vengeance.

There is some romance, but it almost takes second place in relation to everything else that is happening plot-wise. Jade and Dillon's stories are told separately at first and they only meet halfway through the book.

I found the ending somewhat rushed - after such a long story, there was no need to let it go so quickly and so idealistically easy. To be honest, I expected a bit more drama.

Still, if you can overlook the fact that this is an older book and love the genre, Breath of Scandal is a novel I recommend.

Happy readings,
