Review: Bring Me Back

Book Review: Bring Me Back, by B.A. Paris, 5 stars

 ✩✩

Finn and Layla: young and in love, their whole lives ahead of them. Driving back from a holiday in France one night, Finn pulls in to a service station, leaving Layla alone in the car. When he returns, minutes later, Layla has vanished, never to be seen again. That’s the story Finn tells the police. It’s the truth – but not the whole truth.
Twelve years later, Finn has built a new life with Ellen, Layla’s sister, when he receives a phone call. Someone has seen Layla. But is it her – or someone pretending to be her? If it is her, what does she want? And what does she know about the night she disappeared?

Genre: suspense

Publication date: March 2018

Mature content: no, although the plot is psychologically heavy

Review: The plot of Bring Me Back is just like the Russian dolls that are so often mentioned along the book - when you manage to open one and think it's the last one, there's always a smaller one inside.

In the first part of the book we meet Finn. Finn, who dated Layla, was almost convicted of her murder when she disappeared without a trace somewhere in France, and who, twelve years later, is about to marry Layla's sister Ellen.

Suddenly there are clues being dropped here and there that Layla may be alive but, truly, in that first part of the book I kept thinking that he could have been her murderer after all.

Part two of the book contains bits of the story as seen from Layla's perspective, so we begin to realize that she may be indeed alive. Or is she? As Finn has doubts, so do we. As Finn searches for other explanations, some of the alternative scenarios also seem viable, and you don't know what to expect anymore. Especially not the mind-blowing twist at the end.

Vaguely, this book reminded me of Hitchcock's Psycho, because in the end, everything is a mind game. And yes, looking backward, some clues were there from the beginning.

Sometimes the plot moved a bit too slowly for my taste, but I still wanted to stay up late reading Bring Me Back as I was terribly curious to see how unraveled in the end. I realize this may not be a book for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and, as such, I recommend it..

Happy readings,
