Review: My Not So Perfect Life

Book Review: My Not So Perfect Life, by Sophie Kinsella

✩✩

Everywhere Katie Brenner looks, someone else is living the life she longs for, particularly her boss, Demeter Farlowe. Demeter is brilliant and creative, lives with her perfect family in a posh townhouse, and wears the coolest clothes. Katie’s life, meanwhile, is a daily struggle—from her dismal rental to her oddball flatmates to the tense office politics she’s trying to negotiate. No wonder Katie takes refuge in not-quite-true Instagram posts, especially as she's desperate to make her dad proud.
Then, just as she’s finding her feet—not to mention a possible new romance—the worst happens. Demeter fires Katie. Shattered but determined to stay positive, Katie retreats to her family’s farm in Somerset to help them set up a vacation business. London has never seemed so far away—until Demeter unexpectedly turns up as a guest. Secrets are spilled and relationships rejiggered, and as the stakes for Katie’s future get higher, she must question her own assumptions about what makes for a truly meaningful life.

Review: Ok, I realize now I'd been missing a great Sophie Kinsella book for a while. When I realized My Not So Perfect Life was being published I included it in my summer reading list and then had so many people recommend it that I decided to read it immediately.

I have to say that I was not disappointed. It's funny and witty, and downright hilarious in places. As someone who commutes to the city everyday by train and subway, I can totally understand the beginning of the book. Not to mention what we all have suffered, one way of the other, at our first jobs. Then there's that scene with the drone that had me laughing our loud. By the time Katie returns to the farm the plot seems to stall a little, but then picks up the pace again and you just can't put it down until the end. I loved the happy ending, by the way, and I think My Not So Perfect Life would make a great movie.

And then, beyond all the hilarious situations Katie gets herself into (and out of), there's still an important underlying message - no one's life is really one hundred per cent perfect and the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence. We are what we are and should make the most of it.

Totally recommended!
